Donate Life America

About the Book

JT Stone is a national standout, the number one recruited high-school basketball Phenom from the inner city of St. Louis, Missouri. His plans for college ball, followed by the NBA, are in direct conflict with his Mother, Loretta Stone’s schemes. She’s a widowed, single mother of two boys with immediate aspirations of her small family rising out of her perceived poverty on the wings of JT’s great athletic ability. Their conflict will be ultimately resolved by a power that neither of them can anticipate or comprehend – fate.

Kevin Mills, a man pressed to choose between his marriage or the healthcare career he loves, is no more than a familiar acquaintance to Loretta. But, he becomes a trusted friend when their lives meaningfully intersect. He must be the bridge between the gap of Loretta’s dreams of NBA greatness and the reality she is forced to accept.

GIFTED begs you to answer the question: If given the opportunity to save the lives of eight total strangers, would you? Could you?

GIFTED is a story that has been brewing in my head for many years; inspired by my time spent working at Mid-America Transplant in St. Louis, Missouri. This is a fictional story based, loosely, on my experiences there as an Organ Procurement Coordinator. During this time in my career, I had the extreme honor of working with donor families as they navigated the waters of grief and the unexpected loss of their loved one. I was allowed into their lives during what would seem to be their most devastating and vulnerable moments. The compassion that they were able to muster is the reason for this story. It was written as a tribute to each of them and the thousands of donor families around the country that provide the gift of life through the selfless act of organ and tissue donation.

Robert Horsey, RN, BSN

This novel chronicles a rising basketball star who is in an unfortunate accident. The emotions of the families involved are truly conveyed by Mr. Horsey. I recommend this novel to the casual reader and to those who may be unsure about organ donation.

5.0 out of 5 stars  A Lesson about Humanity, Love, and Trust.

This is a nice and quick read that puts most things in life into perspective. It really hits home for me. I haven’t read a fiction book in years! My daughters thought that I was sick or something when they saw me reading an actual book! I typically read the news, nonfiction books, and motivational books on my iPad or iPhone, but I wanted to give this fiction book a fair read and I’m glad that I did! This book is about having hope in humanity, love, and trusting others, when the real world around us is trying to do the exact opposite. I’ve had my fair share of experience in the hospital, as a clinical consultant, and I feel that the clinical details were spot on without getting too technical for the average reader. This is a well written book that reminds me that we’re all one phone call away from being brought down to our knees, but it also reminds me that good things can happen, when life deals you something that is unfathomable.

Gifted is a great read!  The story grabs your attention and keeps it throughout. It draws you in and makes you feel like apart of all the character's lives. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down.  It shows how sometimes through tragedy comes light and peace. Really gave me a new prospective on organ donation from many different angles.
It is well written and as an avid reader I really recommend reading this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars  Impactful as well as entertaining.

Gifted is a powerful story with an important message. It's an emotional journey that shows us how to find good in tragedy. But more importantly, it sheds light on a topic that too frequently is taboo and helps to unravel the mystery of this life giving process. Well done Robert Horsey!

5.0 out of 5 stars  I never really understood the impact before

A friend said I need to read this book and interview the author and she said I would not be the same afterwards. She was right. This is a beautiful story about love, and loss and organ donation and the lasting impact on the giver's family and the recipient.

The author is an insider to organ donation and he has poured every ounce of the reality and love and angst around the process all wrapped up in a wonderful fiction story.

I highly recommend you read this book and they register as an organ donor. Bring your tissues when you read this book!
